Stimulus-Response-Reward…we all get it! But what’s happening with the “reward” part?
The science of human behavior teaches us that “rewards” are key to the basic learning paradigm, motivating individuals to grow in capability, competency, and proficiency, and to achieve and sustain high levels of performance. Research has also shown that within our business environment the most flexible, useful, appealing and powerful formal reward systems involve “pay”.Pay is central to the employment relationship and is one of the most important variables involved in attracting, retaining and engaging top talent. Yet, many of today’s organizations design, implement and maintain complex and costly talent development programs without having the formal reward systems in place to adequately support those programs or ensure their long-term success. And as we know, without the “reward” part…well, according to Skinner, Hull, Vroom and a host of other learning and motivation experts, the whole venture is likely to fall apart for lack of results (“extinction”). The purpose of this program is to a) reinforce the critical importance of “pay” in the design and administration of talent development initiatives, and b) equip HR and talent development professionals to ensure all the pieces are squarely in place to maximize the prospects of success. When equipped with these concepts and alternative approaches, talent development professionals will be in much better situation to capably guide senior management decision-making and ensure the effectiveness of their talent development programs.
