Contents Cleaning Following Disaster

Kristen Schmitz • May 31, 2023

After a disaster has occurred in your home or business, the clean-up process can be daunting. Whether your property suffered damage from a broken pipe, fire, or hurricane, it’s important to get the right contents cleaning professionals to handle the job. Doing so will help you avoid further damage, salvage sentimental items, and get your daily routine back to normal as soon as possible.

How Does the Contents Cleaning Process Work?

Professional contents cleaning companies offer comprehensive recovery systems that allow you to restore your items to their pre-loss condition through a variety of methods. Steps to the contents cleaning process include:

  • Inspect – An initial overview is conducted to determine the scope of the project (extent of damage, how many trucks, workers, supplies, etc. are needed for clean up). Contents cleaning professionals will also help identify any immediate needs you may have like emergency clothing, personal valuables, medications, and more that will stay with you.

  • Take inventory – Pictures are taken of contents and items are determined to be either salvageable or non-salvageable. This can vary depending on the type of damage that has occurred. In most cases, a master inventory list in both digital and paper formats is created to keep track of everything.

  • Determine value – A list of damaged possessions and their value is created to report to your insurance company.

  • Pack-out – This term refers to when contents of a home or business are packed and removed so that cleaning, repairs, and restoration can begin. Contents cleaning professionals will handle packing everything necessary and ensure all furniture is wrapped in padding and secured for protection during transportation.

  • Clean – Your contents cleaning team will determine the best way to proceed based on the type and extent of the contamination. For example, items affected by smoke damage may require different cleaning methods than those affected by a flood.

  • Restore or dispose – Based on the extent of damage, your contents cleaning team will determine whether items can be restored or need to be disposed of.

  • Re-pack and store – After cleaning and restoration have taken place, your contents cleaning team will re-pack and store your items in a climate-controlled facility until it’s time to move them back into your home or business.

  • Return – After cleaning and restoring the contents, items are returned to your home or business using the same inventory and tracking procedures used during the pack-out.

Ahh, October. It’s hard to fathom that we’re already on the brink of Halloween — and then, you know how the rest of the year goes. Before long, we’ll be preparing for our last full company meeting, Family Day, and our Thanksmas celebrations. The end of 2025 will be here before we know it! That being said — no matter what the busy season brings — when it comes to property damage emergencies, our team is always there for you. Meet the Team | Whitney Hampton Every month, I have the opportunity to showcase one of our awesome team members. For October, we are excited to introduce you to Whitney Hampton , one of our Gulfport Business Development Representatives. Gulf Coast Roots & Family Life Whitney was born and raised in New Orleans but has split her time between Louisiana and Mississippi throughout her life. She later moved to Gulfport, where she graduated from high school. As a young adult, she lived in Bossier City, LA. Now, she is back on the coast in Biloxi, where she raises her two children, Kohen and Kobi, with her husband. Education & Professional Background Whitney graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi with a degree in Marketing — SMTTT! This December, she’ll be finishing her master’s in marketing with a specialization in Digital Strategy. Before joining our team in December 2023, she worked in property management. Whitney started in leasing, then was promoted to Community Manager, where she received the Best Marketing Award in 2023 . Life Outside of Work Personally, when she is not working, Whitney is usually busy with “The Adventures of Kohen and Kobi.” They love spending their weekends exploring new places, such as the science museum, zoo, or splash pad. Staying active and making fun memories together is what she enjoys most. Sports are a big part of the Hampton household. They are big Philadelphia Eagles fans — GO BIRDS! They also love the Florida Gators and have attended many games in Gainesville. Saturdays and Sundays are definitely football days in their house.
