Let's Talk: How to Become a Better Communicator

Jordan Steib • May 25, 2022

Communication literally makes the world go ‘round – right? From your personal life, to professional life, to everyday activities, communication plays a vital role in the success of everything. Being able to communicate effectively will enhance your relationships and improve the way you operate through daily tasks. We communicate through many ways. Understanding the difference between those ways will lead you to be a successful communicator.

Three Types of Communication

What are the types of communication should you be aware of? You may not have realized there were so many different ones because we do them intrinsically most often. Let’s go through some of the most common and most important formats of communication:

  1. Verbal Communication: Talking! This is simply speaking to another person, but it entails so much more than just words and happens in real time. This format encompasses both how you deliver a message and receive a message. Speaking clearly, choosing words carefully, knowing the audience with whom you are speaking, and keeping your tone in check can significantly impact your conversations with other people.
  2. Written communication: Writing! Emails, training manuals, menus, text messages, letters – all these things are common written communication tools we all use in our day-to-day lives. This format can be constructed over long periods of time. You should take your time to develop the message you want to covey. In other words, you do not want to be put on the spot and forced to reply immediately. Using this format, you can reach large groups of people rather than the typical one-to-one verbal communication format.
  3. Non-verbal Communication: What are you saying when you are not talking? Most of our communication is non-verbal, meaning facial expressions, body language, eye contact, and body posture. These cues will tell you a lot about what a person is saying when communicating. Ensure that what you are saying out loud matches up with what your body is saying.

Don’t Forget about Listening!

Communication is the base of how we stay connected to the world around us. While all these communication formats are important, it’s always a great idea to tune up your listening skills as well. Being a great listener is probably the most important part of being a better communicator. When you really focus and tune out distractions, you can make the most out of your conversations. Showing interest and repeating something back to a speaker in your own words can also help you grasp what the speaker is saying.

When it comes to being a better communicator, there is always plenty of room for improvement for everyone. By brushing up on these skills, you will see a notable difference, not only in your professional life, but also, richer, deeper relationships with the people who you care the most about.
