Global Diversity Awareness Month And GRS

Shawn Folks • Oct 28, 2020

The month of October brings many things, the beginning of Fall, cooler temperatures (well, in some areas of the country, not usually Louisiana), football games, Halloween and more. It is also Global Diversity Awareness Month. This designation was established to celebrate and recognize the diverse minds and beliefs held by all cultures around the world.

GLOBAL DIVERSITY AWARENESS: WHERE THE IDEA BEGAN

Following World War II, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly at the Palais de Chaillot in Paris. This declaration signifies the first global expression of rights that all human beings are inherently given. It acknowledged that as people, we should recognize and value each person, regardless of their color, nationality, gender, country of origin, language or other trait.

In addition to this declaration, the U.S. Congress passed the Equal Employment Opportunity Act in 1972. This act gave the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) the authority to sue federal courts when it “finds reasonable cause to believe that there has been employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex or national origin.”

Last year, the United Nations International Migration report said that approximately 272 million people live in a country other than the country where they were born. This is a 77% increase from 1990. This means that migration has almost become a tool to carry skillets and perspectives into the workforce around the world.

As the world continues to become more connected and globalized with the advancement of technologies, it is important to remember that “global monoculture,” or the homogenization of cultures, eradicates traditional cultures and unique characteristics of peoples. The increased ability to connect also brings an opportunity to spread cultures even further.

While its origins are unclear, Global Diversity Awareness Month brings a chance to learn about new cultures and ethnicities and delve into what truly makes the world so unique. It also exemplifies how important it is to have a diverse workforce or team within a single company.

GLOBAL DIVERSITY AWARENESS: WE ARE ONE, DIVERSE FAMILY

At Guarantee Restoration Services, we were founded by five core values that emulate our company culture. These are efficiency, workmanship, partnership, honesty and commitment. It is also important to hire unique individuals with different perspectives, varied backgrounds and skillsets. Our team is comprised of over 140 individuals that come from all walks of life and different places around the state, country and world. Although we are at the end of October for this year, we recognize this Global Diversity Awareness designated month as an opportunity to continue to embrace differences every day.

Spring has Sprung! April has without a doubt already brought the showers. Our team has been busy helping our partners recover from the severe weather along the Gulf Coast this week. This month, we shine the spotlight on Nicole Gregory. She serves as a technician at our Gulfport, Mississippi branch. Nicole was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona. She moved to the Mississippi Gulf Coast about 20 years ago. After high school, she attended Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. Prior to joining the GRS team in July 2022, she was a nursing assistant for two years. When she is not working, she spends her free time with her 10-year-old son, Dylan. They enjoy roller skating and any fun, outside activities that they can do together. When she can, she likes to fix things around the house. During football season, she loves watching her favorite team, the Las Vegas Raiders. Finally, I asked Nicole what she likes about working for our company. She responded, “I love working with my coworkers, they are my favorite part about working with Guarantee Restoration Services.”
