4 Myths You Shouldn't Believe About Mold

Brandon Roberts • July 20, 2022

For any home or business owner, mold is a dreaded word to hear. Most of us fear it, but very few of us really understand it. Rumors and misinformation about mold seem to spread as rapidly as the spores themselves. So, let’s take a moment to clear up some of the most prevalent misconceptions about mold.

Myth 1: You Can Always See Mold

Mold spores are microscopic and occur naturally in pretty much all environments. Like it or not, you likely have mold somewhere in your home or business already. Fortunately, these tiny, invisible spores typically occur in such small quantities that they do not pose a threat. Still, even a larger, more dangerous infestation doesn’t always come with visible signs. That’s why it is important to be aware of other mold clues like a musty odor and signs of potential water damage.

Myth 2: Bleach Will Kill Mold

Many believe bleach is an effective solution to eradicate mold. In reality, it only covers up the problem and could potentially make it worse. Bleach certainly eliminates our ability to see the mold, but it still exists. Furthermore, the bleach has the ability to accelerate the regrowth of any mold that has been removed. Truthfully, the only real effective way to eliminate mold for good is by addressing the source.

Myth 3: Only Black Mold Causes Health Problems

Black mold has developed a severe reputation for causing health problems, but it should really be sharing this reputation with others. In fact, there is no proof that black mold is more toxic than other forms. Any type of mold has the same potential to aggravate allergies and cause respiratory problems.

Myth 4: It’s Fine to Clean Mold Yourself

As previously mentioned with bleach, simply removing the surface stains of mold is not enough to kill it completely. Without the proper tools to detect the presence of mold, there is no way to ensure it has been fully eliminated. Furthermore, the cleaning products chosen could even make the problem worse.
